Top must watch movies Adapted from novels

In times like these where people are not just hungry to read but to all engorge on the visual stimulation. These stories are visual manifestation of classic and contempory novels for both who are readers and non readers. And producers gamble on these stories, as some did great as novels and movies and some did great only as novels and yet some did only as movies. We won’t look at the whole list as it’s very long but i will enlighten you with a few movies that you must see which were adapted from novels. 

9) Great expectation 

1946 British film, directed by David Lean,  based on the novel by Charles Dickens. Staring John Mills, Bernard Miles, Finlay Currie, Jean Simmons, Martita Hunt, Alec Guinness and Valerie Hobson. It won two academy awards and was nominated for 3 more categories. The script is a slimmed down version of Dickens novel. The story is about a humble orphan who suddenly becomes a gentleman with the help of an unknown benefactor.

8) No country for old men 

Based on Cormac Mccarthy’s novel of the same name. It was directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. A cat and mouse drama set in the desert of 1980. It won four 80th academy awards. It won British academy film awards (BAFA) as well. Violence begins after a hunter stumbled upon a drug deal gone wrong. 

7) Lolita 

Novel by Vladimir Nabokov, written and published in 1955. It was made into a movie in 1962 directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film stars James Mason, Sue Lyon, Shelley winters and Peter sellers. It’s about a middle aged man attracted by a teenaged girl.

6) Babe 

Novel by Dick King- Smith which was published in 1983 by the name of sheep-pig. It’s a comedy-drama film directed by George Miller. It was nominated for 7 academy awards. It also won Golden Globe award. By the name of the novel we get to know what the story is all about. It’s interesting to see how a pig tries to take over the job of a sheep-dog.

5) Silver Linings Playbook

The novel was written by Matthew Quick and was made into a film in 2012 Directed by David O.Russell.Film stars are Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher and Julia Stiles. It was nominated for 8 academy awards. It also was nominated for Golden Globe Award, three BAFTA and was nominated for few other awards as well. Story goes like this that after an act in a mental institution Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents. Things get challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a girl with problems of her own. 

4) To kill a mocking bird

1962 American drama film. Directed by Robert Milligan. It stars Gregory Peck and Mary Badham. The film received great reviews from critics. It earned 10 times it’s budget. The film won three academy awards. Story is about a lawyer Atticus Finch who defends a black man against an undeserved rape charges and his life against prejudice. 

3) The Lord of the rings

The novel was writen by J.R.R Talkien in 1968. It was made into a film in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Directed by Peter Jackson. It is considered to be the one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects. However they have omitted some of the novel’s elements and added some of their own. All the film were heavily awarded and winning 17 out of 30 academy awards. The film revolves around a ring where Sauron wants to use it to make his return and dominate the middle earth but there are two hobbits who are on their own after breaking of the fellowship. Their mission is to destroy the ring. Others, however help to defeat Orcs who are trying to takeover the kingdoms of men. 

2) One flew over the cockoo’s nest.

The novel was published and written by Ken Kesey in 1962. Movie was made in 1975 starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and Will Sampson. The film won all five major academy awards. A criminal fakes insanity to escape, and he reaches mental institute. After reaching there he needs to stand against doctor’s and nurses’ cruelty.

1) The Godfather

Book was written by Mario Puzo in 1969 and was transformed into a movie in 1972. It’s a crime film directed by Albert S.Rudoly. It was the best-selling novel of the time and as well as the best film. It won 3 Oscars and were nominated for 7 other Oscars. It is regarded as the greatest film in the world of cinema. Story is simple, it’s about a Godfather forwarding his empire to his youngest son.
